The Debate — and Why It's Often Wrong

The barefoot versus shod debate is one of the most polarized conversations in equine management — and one of the least productive. Passionate advocates on both sides have turned a practical management decision into an ideological position, which doesn't serve horses.

The barefoot movement, which gained significant momentum from the 1990s onward, made an important contribution: it forced the industry to examine whether routine shoeing was always necessary, and whether conventional trimming practices were optimal for hoof health. Many of those questions were good ones. Some of the conclusions drawn went further than the evidence supported.

The conventional shoeing community, for its part, sometimes defaulted to tradition rather than evidence — shoeing horses because that's what had always been done, without examining whether a particular horse in particular circumstances actually needed shoes.

The honest position, supported by both veterinary science and experienced farriery, is that neither barefoot nor shod is universally superior. The right answer depends on the individual horse's hoof quality, conformation, work demands, footing, and health history. Some horses do beautifully barefoot for their entire working lives. Others need shoes for protection, therapeutic support, or performance reasons that barefoot cannot provide. Most horses fall somewhere in between, and the ideal approach may shift as their circumstances change.

The Only Question That Matters

Not "is barefoot better?" or "is shoeing better?" — but "what does this horse, doing this work, on this footing, with this hoof quality, need right now?" That question has a specific, observable answer. The ideological question doesn't.

Understanding what a shoe actually changes — mechanically and physiologically — is the foundation of a rational decision. Shoes are not neutral. They alter the hoof in significant ways, for better and for worse depending on the horse's situation.

Going barefoot is not simply the absence of shoes — it requires active management and an appropriate environment to produce good outcomes. A neglected barefoot horse on the wrong terrain is worse off than a well-shod horse. Barefoot success is the result of management, not just shoe removal.

What the Science Shows

The scientific literature on barefoot versus shod is more nuanced than either advocacy camp typically acknowledges. Here is a balanced summary of what peer-reviewed research has found:

Hoof Shape and Structure

Clayton et al. (2011) found that barefoot trimming resulted in increased heel angle and improved solar angle of the distal phalanx compared to conventional shod trims — findings that barefoot advocates correctly cite as evidence of improved morphology. A 2019 crossover study of 11 horses found coronary band circumference decreased more significantly when shod than barefoot, and hoof angle decreased when shod but increased when barefoot over a seven-week period. These findings suggest that routine shoeing does produce measurable changes in hoof capsule geometry, and that barefoot management tends toward improved angles under controlled conditions.

Digital Cushion Development

Proske et al. (2017) found altered locomotion in shod versus barefoot horses alongside increased digital cushion depth after a period of barefoot management — pointing toward more optimal internal foot structure developing without shoes. Bowker's work at Michigan State University established that the digital cushion transitions from adipose (fatty) tissue to fibrocartilage through mechanical stimulation, and that this process is inhibited by reduced frog contact — which shoeing can cause if frog ground contact is lost.

Concussion and Lameness

Research on concussion is consistent: barefoot hooves on appropriate footing absorb and dissipate ground impact more effectively than metal-shod hooves. The clinical implication — that long-term shoeing may predispose to lameness through cumulative concussion — is biologically plausible but difficult to prove definitively in controlled studies because of the many confounding variables in horse management over years.

Performance

The performance evidence is genuinely mixed. Barefoot horses have competed successfully at elite level in endurance, dressage, and some jumping disciplines. They have also failed at these disciplines when hoof quality or terrain demanded more protection than they could provide. Shod horses dominate high-intensity performance disciplines — racing, cutting, high-level reining — where the specific mechanical requirements (traction, protection, therapeutic support) consistently indicate shoeing.

What the Science Cannot Tell You

No study can tell you whether your specific horse should be barefoot or shod. Population-level research describes averages across groups — it doesn't resolve the individual case. The research informs the framework; your horse's specific hoof quality, work demands, and response to management determine the answer.

The Decision Framework

The right question is not "is barefoot better?" but "what does my horse actually need?" Answer these five questions honestly and the decision becomes clear.

No single factor is decisive. A horse with excellent hoof quality doing heavy arena work may still need fronts for traction and protection. A horse with moderate hoof quality that lives on soft pasture 23 hours a day may do perfectly well barefoot. Weigh all five factors together and consult your farrier — who can assess hoof quality directly — before making a change.

When Shoes Are Necessary

These are the situations where barefoot is genuinely contraindicated — not a philosophical choice, but a practical necessity.

Wear Exceeds Growth
  • Horse works regularly on abrasive surfaces
  • Hooves chip, crack, and wear faster than they grow
  • Horse becomes progressively sore between trims
  • The hoof simply cannot sustain the work without protection
Therapeutic Need
  • Active laminitis or founder requiring rotation management
  • Navicular syndrome requiring egg bars and heel elevation
  • Tendon or ligament injury requiring load reduction
  • Any condition in the corrective shoeing guide
Traction Requirements
  • Work on ice, wet pavement, or slippery surfaces
  • Performance disciplines requiring studs or borium
  • Horse that slips on its primary working surface barefoot
  • Safety requirements that a bare hoof cannot meet
Poor Hoof Quality
  • Chronically thin walls that crumble and chip excessively barefoot
  • Flat soles that bruise on any hard surface
  • Poor hoof quality unresponsive to nutritional management
  • Hoof wall integrity insufficient for barefoot work
Front Shoes Only — The Common Middle Ground

Many horses need front shoes but not hinds. The front limbs bear roughly 60% of the horse's weight and bear more concussion impact — they wear faster and are more prone to bruising on hard surfaces. Horses with adequate hind hoof quality often go comfortably barefoot behind while wearing front shoes. This is a rational and common approach that balances protection with natural hoof function.

When Barefoot Works

These are the conditions under which barefoot management consistently produces good outcomes.

  • Naturally hard, dense hoof wall with adequate wall thickness
  • Good sole concavity and adequate sole depth
  • Well-developed frog and digital cushion
  • Lives primarily on varied terrain with good movement
  • Light to moderate work on soft or mixed surfaces
  • Sound, no history of chronic lameness
  • Balanced diet supporting good hoof quality
Situations Where Barefoot Excels
  • Horses at pasture rest or in light trail work
  • Endurance horses on appropriate terrain with hoof boots for technical sections
  • Young horses in development (under 2–3 years)
  • Contracted heel rehabilitation — barefoot often the fastest route to expansion
  • Winter rest periods for horses that return to shoes for the competition season
  • Horses being transitioned off therapeutic shoes after rehabilitation

The Seasonal Barefoot Approach

Many performance horse owners shoe for the competition season and pull shoes for the winter when work is reduced and footing is softer. This "periodic barefoot" approach gives the hoof a rest from the constraints of shoeing, allows the frog to contact the ground and stimulate blood flow through the winter months, and often produces noticeably better hoof quality by the time shoes go back on in spring. It requires proper barefoot trimming during the shoeless period — not neglect — and hoof boots for any work on hard or rocky ground.

Transitioning from Shod to Barefoot

The most common mistake in barefoot transitions is speed. Pulling shoes and immediately resuming normal work is the fastest way to a sore, reluctant horse and a decision that barefoot "doesn't work." A proper transition takes months — 6 to 12 is the standard range, and 18 months for horses shod for many years doing heavy work.

The reason: years of shoeing produce underdeveloped frogs and digital cushions, sometimes contracted heels, and soles that haven't been toughened by ground contact. The transition period is the time required for those structures to develop and harden. It cannot be skipped.

Pull the Shoes and Assess
Have your farrier assess hoof quality at shoe removal. Note sole depth, wall thickness, frog development, and heel condition. This assessment sets the baseline and informs whether the transition is realistic for this horse. A horse with severely flat soles or chronically thin walls may need more preparation before transitioning.

Apply a Proper Barefoot Trim
A barefoot trim is not a shoe-ready trim without a shoe. The mustang roll (beveled hoof wall edge), careful sole management, and attention to frog health are essential. Work with a farrier or trimmer experienced in barefoot horses — the approach differs meaningfully from conventional trimming. The initial trim may feel unfamiliar to the horse as the angles change.

Start on Soft Ground
Begin with turnout on soft footing — pasture, arena sand, grass — and limit or eliminate work on hard or rocky surfaces for the first 4–8 weeks. The sole and frog need time to toughen. A horse that was comfortable in the first week of transition and becomes sore in week three is not "failing" barefoot — it has moved from soft to harder footing before the hoof was ready.

Use Hoof Boots for Work
Hoof boots allow the horse to continue working on mixed or harder terrain during the transition without damaging the still-developing sole and frog. This is not a compromise — it is the correct management approach. A horse that is comfortable and working in boots is doing the transition correctly. Boots come off for turnout so the hoof continues to develop naturally through ground contact.

Gradually Introduce Harder Surfaces
As the sole toughens and the frog develops — typically visible as a denser, more rubbery frog and a firmer, more concave sole — progressively introduce harder surfaces without boots. Start with packed dirt, then gravel, then harder terrain. Watch the horse carefully for any sign of discomfort. A horse that moves freely on one surface may need boots on a harder one for several more months.

Maintain 4–6 Week Trim Intervals
Barefoot horses need trimming as regularly as shod horses — often more frequently during the transition, when uneven wear and growth patterns may develop. Do not let the hoof go untrimmed for longer than 6 weeks during the transition. An overgrown barefoot hoof develops flares and leverage problems as quickly as an overgrown shod hoof.

Review Nutrition
Diet and mineral balance significantly affect hoof quality during transition. Ensure adequate biotin (20mg/day minimum for a horse with known hoof quality issues), zinc, copper, and methionine. Excess sugar and starch in the diet can slow hoof quality improvement and increase laminitis risk. A hay analysis is worth doing if hoof quality is struggling to improve despite good management.

Know When to Stop
Some horses don't successfully transition to barefoot, and that is a legitimate outcome — not a failure of the approach. If a horse remains sore on appropriate footing after 6–9 months of correct management, with boots providing the only comfortable work environment, it may need shoes. Hoof quality that doesn't improve with nutritional management, severe flat soles, or chronic thin walls are realistic barriers. Return to shoes without guilt.
Pulling Shoes Is Not the Transition

Shoe removal is the beginning of the transition, not the transition itself. The actual transition is the 6–18 months of progressive conditioning, careful trimming, nutritional management, and graduated surface exposure that follows. Owners who pull shoes and consider the matter resolved in week one are not doing a barefoot transition — they are simply leaving a horse unshod and unmanaged.

Hoof Boots — The Middle Ground

Hoof boots are removable protective covers that slip on for riding or specific conditions and come off for normal turnout. They have evolved significantly over the past 20 years and are now legitimate performance equipment — not a compromise solution or a sign that the horse can't go barefoot.

Hoof boots allow a barefoot horse to work on terrain its unprotected hoof cannot handle, without the permanent constraints of metal shoes. They are the essential bridge during transitions and a permanent tool for many horses that thrive barefoot at home but need protection for specific terrain or work.

When to Use Hoof Boots

Boot Fit Is Critical

A poorly fitted hoof boot causes rubs, sores, and can be dangerous if it slips during work. Measure carefully using the manufacturer's sizing guide — trace the hoof on paper and measure width and length precisely. When in doubt between sizes, try both before buying. The boot should fit snugly without pinching and stay on securely during work without wiggling.

The barefoot-versus-shod answer varies meaningfully by discipline. Here is the practical reality across common riding uses.

Endurance & Trail

The discipline with the most successful barefoot culture. Significant numbers of endurance horses, including top-10 finishers and Tevis Cup competitors, complete demanding distances barefoot with hoof boots on technical sections. The key factors: hardened hooves from years of conditioning on varied terrain, appropriate boot selection for difficult sections, and the reality that endurance terrain varies significantly — what works in Florida sand may not work in the Sierra Nevada. Shod is still the majority practice at upper levels where footing is unpredictable and the consequences of boot loss in rocky terrain are serious.

Dressage

Increasingly, lower-level dressage horses work barefoot on suitable arena footing. The flat, consistent, managed surfaces of indoor arenas are among the most barefoot-friendly work environments. Higher-level horses and those working on outdoor or mixed footing more commonly require fronts at minimum. The key consideration is that collected work puts significant downward force on the hoof — good sole depth is essential.

Show Jumping & Eventing

Barefoot is rare in these disciplines at any competitive level. The combination of hard take-off and landing surfaces, studs required for grass footing, and the forces involved in jumping make shoes functionally necessary for most horses. Some lower-level horses jump small courses barefoot on forgiving footing, but this is the exception. Eventing's cross-country phase — combining speed, varying footing, and significant obstacles — virtually always requires shoeing.

Western Performance (Reining, Cutting, Barrel Racing)

Shoeing is universal in serious western performance. Reining horses require sliding plates on the hinds — a shoe type that is foundational to the discipline. Cutting horses need the specific traction pattern their shoes provide for the explosive lateral movements the work demands. Barrel horses need traction for tight turns at speed. These disciplines define their shoeing requirements; barefoot is not a viable option at competition level.

Pleasure Riding & Light Work

This is where barefoot most often succeeds. A horse doing weekend trail rides on soft terrain, light arena work, or occasional hacking is an excellent candidate. The work demands don't exceed what a well-conditioned hoof can handle on appropriate surfaces, and the lack of intense performance requirements means traction and protection are rarely critical. Hoof quality and footing remain the deciding factors.

Pasture & Retired Horses

The clearest case for barefoot. A horse at pasture rest with no work requirements is almost always better off without shoes — they can be genuinely harmful on a horse that isn't working, restricting hoof mechanism and frog development without providing any protective benefit. Pulling shoes on retirement and maintaining with regular trims is the standard recommendation from most farriers and vets.
