What is the difference between hot shoeing and cold shoeing?

What is white line disease and how serious is it?

White line disease (also called seedy toe or onychomycosis) is a fungal and bacterial infection that invades the unpigmented inner hoof wall — the white line. What is contracted heel and what causes it?

What is seedy toe?

It's caused by the same organisms as white line disease generally — a combination of fungi and bacteria that invade through cracks, nail holes, or naturally weak spots. Long toes are a risk factor because the extended toe creates leverage that stresses and opens the white line.

What is laminitis and what causes it?

Laminitis is inflammation of the sensitive laminae — the tissue that bonds the coffin bone to the hoof wall. When the laminae become inflamed and begin to fail, the coffin bone can rotate downward (tip forward) or sink within the hoof capsule. This is a veterinary emergency.

What is ringbone?

Ringbone is the growth of new bone (periosteal proliferation) around the pastern or coffin joints. It's a form of osteoarthritis. High ringbone affects the pastern joint between P1 and P2. Low ringbone affects the coffin joint between P2 and P3 inside the hoof capsule — the more serious of the two.

What is sidebone?

Common in heavier breeds and horses doing repetitive work on hard ground. Often found incidentally on X-ray in horses without lameness. What is canker?

Canker is a chronic, progressive infection of the frog and sole involving abnormal, hypertrophied (overgrown) horn tissue. It looks like cauliflower-like white or gray proliferating tissue growing from the frog area. It bleeds easily and has a characteristic foul smell. Unlike thrush, which is a surface infection, canker invades the underlying sensitive tissue.

Canker is far rarer than thrush but far more serious.   • Rocker shoe (full rocker): The entire shoe is curved from heel to toe — no flat section anywhere. The hoof rolls in any direction with minimal joint stress. Long toe, low heel (LTLH) is one of the most common and damaging hoof imbalances — and one of the most often overlooked until it causes serious problems. The toe grows long while the heel collapses, creating a broken-back hoof-pastern axis.

The consequences are significant: the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) is put under excessive tension with every step. Over time this contributes to navicular syndrome, DDFT tears, heel pain, and coffin joint arthritis. The horse looks like he's standing downhill in front.

Correction: regular farrier attention to maintain appropriate heel height and keep the toe back. Once LTLH is established, the horse often needs elevated heel pads or wedges during the correction period to avoid overstressing the DDFT while the heel is rebuilt.

What is a farrier's role in laminitis treatment?

The farrier is a critical member of the laminitis treatment team — not a secondary one. Once a vet has stabilized the horse medically and taken radiographs to assess coffin bone position, the farrier's job is to shoe the horse in a way that:

  • Offloads the toe (where the coffin bone is pressing) and transfers weight to the frog and heel
  • Provides sole protection if the coffin bone has dropped near the sole surface
  • Supports the back of the foot to reduce tension on the DDFT

Heart bar shoes, reverse shoes, wide web aluminum shoes, and deep bedding combined with pads are all tools. The exact approach depends on the rotation angle and the individual case. Vet radiographs and farrier collaboration are non-negotiable for serious laminitis.

Can shoeing fix a horse that forges or interferes?

Forging is when the hind toe strikes the bottom of the front shoe — you hear a clicking sound at the trot. Interfering is when one leg strikes the inside of the opposite leg.

Both can be addressed through shoeing modifications:

  • A rolled or squared toe on the front shoe speeds up breakover, getting the front foot out of the way faster before the hind arrives
  • Shortening the front shoe at the toe also helps with forging
  • Weighted shoes or boots on the hinds slow the hind breakover
  • For interfering, lateral extensions or modified shoe placement helps shift the foot's path

A pour-in pad is a two-part polyurethane foam that a farrier mixes and pours into the space between the shoe and the sole while it's still liquid. Used for: horses with thin, sensitive soles that bruise on hard or rocky ground; horses recovering from abscesses or sole injuries; laminitic horses needing uniform frog and sole support; and performance horses competing on hard arena surfaces. More supportive and custom-fitted than a flat pad, but also more expensive and requires skill to apply correctly.
