Barrel Racing Shoe Selection

A barrel horse running 15–17 seconds around a cloverleaf pattern at top speed puts enormous lateral forces on the hooves at each barrel turn. The shoe must grip enough for the horse to push off the turn without slipping, but not so aggressively that it catches and torques the limb during the turn itself. Standard fullered steel shoes are the most common choice — the fuller provides adequate traction on most arena dirt without the risk of excessive grip. Borium applied to the heel calks provides additional security on hard-packed or slick surfaces. Quarter clips or side clips on front shoes prevent shoe shifting during the speed and direction changes at each barrel.
