The Traction–Slide Balance

A cutting horse must stop, turn, and accelerate in fractions of a second to match a cow's movement. That requires enough hoof grip to push off laterally without slipping — but a horse that can't slide at all in a stop will jar joints and lose competitive marks. The shoeing solution is a moderate sliding plate on the hinds — narrower and shorter than a pure reining plate (typically ¾ to 1 inch wide vs. 1–1½ inch for reining) — combined with enough surface texture to allow some traction during the working phase.
