Shoe Selection for Collection Work
Most dressage horses work on predictable indoor arena footing — rubber-covered sand or fiber-sand mixtures — where traction is consistent and major grip interventions are not needed. Rim shoes or standard fullered shoes without studs are the everyday choice. Aluminum front shoes are widely used in dressage because reducing front limb weight reduces the energy cost of elevated collected movements — over hours of collected work, lighter shoes reduce fatigue. The hindquarters in dressage provide the power; the fronts display the expression. A horse working through Grand Prix movements is asking its front limbs to perform extremely elevated, timed work — every gram of shoe weight and every millimeter of breakover affects whether that expression is effortless or labored.
- Front shoe preference: Aluminum widely used to reduce weight and fatigue in collection

The Precision Demand: Hoof Balance in Dressage
At the highest levels of dressage, judges score movement quality to tenths of a point. Uneven medial-lateral balance causes asymmetric joint loading that shows as uneven steps — visible in the rhythmic work of passage and piaffe. A broken-back hoof-pastern axis (long toe, low heel) causes late, labored breakover that reads as a lack of suspension in the trot. These are not subtle problems — they show on camera and in the judge's book. Dressage farriers at the top level often work in close collaboration with the rider and trainer, watching horses work under saddle and fine-tuning breakover and balance with every reset. The rolled toe has become increasingly standard in dressage farriery for exactly this reason — it produces earlier, more consistent breakover that improves movement quality.
