Reining demands the most specialized hind shoeing in western performance. The sliding stop — where a horse plants both hinds and slides 20–40 feet — is only possible with the right plate combination, fitted precisely to that horse's conformation and stopping style.

The Sliding Plate — Purpose and Design
Sliding plates are wide, flat, smooth, and elongated — the exact opposite of a traction shoe. The ground surface has minimal to no crease or groove, allowing the steel to slide freely across packed arena dirt without biting in. Plate widths range from ¾ inch to 1½ inches, increasing in ¼-inch increments. The wider the plate, the more slide surface area — but wider plates require a horse with the conformation and training to use them safely. Heel extensions behind the hoof provide additional slide surface and shift the base of support rearward, helping the horse sit into the stop. The length of the heel extension is one of the most carefully calibrated variables in reining farriery — too long and the horse trips or loses control of the slide; too short and the stop is short and abrupt.
- Plate width range: ¾ inch to 1½ inches in ¼-inch increments
- Section thickness: Typically ¼ inch throughout
- Material: Steel — aluminum is rarely used on hinds in reining due to durability requirements
- Nail count: Typically 4–6 nails; fewer nails reduce friction points
- Heel treatment: Smooth, rounded heels — no calks, no borium, no traction of any kind
Front Shoe Selection
Reining front shoes are standard fullered or swedge shoes — the front end needs enough traction to allow direction changes, spins, and circles without slipping, while remaining light enough not to impede the horse's movement. Many farriers use aluminum on the fronts to reduce overall limb weight and fatigue across long training and competition sessions. Quarter clips or toe clips on the front shoes prevent shifting during spins, where lateral forces on the shoe are significant. Bell boots are worn at all times on the fronts to protect the heel bulbs from the overreaching hind sliding plates — a shod horse without bell boots in a reining barn is asking for a pulled heel.
- Common front shoe: Fullered steel or aluminum, size matched to foot
- Clips: Quarter or toe clips to prevent spin-induced shifting
- Bell boots: Mandatory — hind plates will overreach and strike front heels
- Weight preference: Many trainers prefer aluminum fronts for collection work
Farrier–Trainer Collaboration
No discipline requires closer farrier–trainer communication than reining. The plate configuration is not a generic prescription — it is dialed in for each individual horse based on conformation (cow-hocked vs. straight, sickle-hocked vs. post-legged), current training level, the specific footing at the home facility, and the competition venues anticipated. A horse stopping on packed California soil needs different plates than the same horse competing on Oklahoma sand. Farriers working in reining country often attend competitions to watch their horses stop and adjust accordingly. The farrier, trainer, and horse owner form a three-way team, and the plate selection is reviewed and potentially adjusted at every shoeing cycle.
- Typical reset interval: 5–6 weeks — shorter than general shoeing due to performance demands
- Key evaluation: Watch the horse stop — is the slide smooth? Does the horse trip? Are heels dragging or skipping?
- Surface variable: Hard packed dirt = narrower plates; deep/sandy = wider plates with longer heels
