Rim Shoes and Stud Shoes

The two standard shoe types in show jumping are rim shoes and stud shoes. Rim shoes have a raised rim on the ground surface that grips turf and arena footing consistently without requiring individual stud selection — the shoe provides traction in all directions. Stud shoes are standard or rim shoes with pre-tapped threaded holes in the heel and/or toe positions that accept removable threaded studs. The rider or groom swaps studs for each surface: small road studs for dry firm grass, medium grass studs for normal going, large or pointed studs for deep or wet conditions. Many top competitors carry multiple sets and change studs between rounds.
