Thoroughbred racing produces the most specialized farriery in the equine world. Race plate farriers work at speeds and volumes that would be unrecognizable to a general farrier, applying ultra-lightweight aluminum plates tailored to each horse, surface, and race distance.

The Racing Plate — Design and Weight
A Thoroughbred racing plate typically weighs 50–100 grams on the front feet — compared to 150–250 grams for a standard steel shoe. This weight saving matters enormously: research on racing Thoroughbreds estimates that each 100 grams of additional shoe weight costs approximately 1 length (about 2.4 meters) over a mile. The aluminum alloy used in racing plates is far stronger than pure aluminum, but still softer than steel — plates wear quickly on pavement and non-racing surfaces, which is why Thoroughbreds are walked from the barn to the track on rubber mats wherever possible. Plates are replaced at every shoeing cycle, typically every 2–3 weeks at a working stable.

Dirt vs. Turf Plate Configuration
Dirt track and turf racing require different plate configurations. Dirt track plates typically feature a toe grab — a raised lip at the front of the shoe that bites into the loose track surface — and sometimes heel grabs. The aggressiveness of the traction devices is calibrated to the track condition rating (fast, good, muddy, sloppy). Turf plates are flatter with minimal toe grab, since turf provides its own grip through the grass root system and aggressive grabs would damage the turf. Some turf plates have stud holes for small grass studs. Synthetic track plates (used on Polytrack and Tapeta surfaces) are typically flat with no grab — these artificial surfaces have consistent, built-in traction characteristics.

- Dirt off-track: Larger toe and heel grabs for purchase in mud or slop
- Turf: Flat or minimal toe grab; sometimes small stud holes
- Synthetic track: Flat plate — no grabs needed on Polytrack/Tapeta
- Hind plates: Often heavier with block heels or different grab configurations
The Track Farrier's World
Race plate farriery at a major training facility is a world apart from general practice. A track farrier may shoe 15–25 horses before morning training ends, working in 30-minute windows between training sets. Speed, precision, and horse handling skill must all be at professional levels simultaneously. Track farriers develop deep knowledge of each horse in their string — which horse is difficult, which has thin walls that require careful nailing, which trainer insists on a specific plate configuration. The relationship between track trainer and farrier is one of the closest in the equine industry — the farrier's work directly affects the horse's performance in a way that is immediately measurable in race results.
