Trail and endurance riding span more varied terrain than any other discipline — rocky mountain trails, deep mud, sandy washes, paved roads, water crossings. The shoeing must protect the hoof across all conditions for hours or days at a time, with no opportunity to change shoes mid-ride.

Shoe Selection for Long-Distance Work
The primary considerations for trail and endurance shoeing are durability, traction across multiple surfaces, and shoe security. A shoe that pulls off at mile 40 of a 50-mile ride is a significant problem — the horse cannot continue, the rider is eliminated, and the horse may be injured on the return to the trailer. Medium-weight steel fullered shoes are the standard for most trail horses — lighter than draft shoes but heavier and more durable than performance aluminum. Borium applied to the toe and heel areas dramatically increases shoe life on abrasive rock and provides reliable traction on wet granite and hard desert rock. A horse covering 50–100 miles over varied rocky terrain can wear through a standard steel shoe in 4–5 weeks; borium-tipped shoes may last a full 6–8 week cycle.

- Nail count: 6–8 nails — security is critical when shoe loss is difficult to address on trail
- Clips: Toe clips add security without adding significant weight
- Interval: 6 weeks with borium on rock; 4–5 weeks without on abrasive terrain
Barefoot and Hoof Boots
A significant percentage of endurance horses compete successfully barefoot, particularly those with naturally hard, well-developed hooves who have been gradually conditioned on abrasive terrain. The barefoot endurance movement is well-established — the 2016 Tevis Cup winner completed the 100-mile one-day ride barefoot. Barefoot endurance horses typically carry hoof boots (Scoot Boots, Renegades, EasyCare Gloves) for technically difficult sections — rocks, pavement, steep descents — and may be booted only on the fronts, which bear more impact load. The boots are removed for easier terrain. The transition from shod to barefoot for endurance horses takes 12–18 months of gradual conditioning — pulling shoes and immediately competing is not a reasonable approach.
- Barefoot viability: Strong evidence — multiple Tevis winners and top 10s have competed barefoot
- Hoof boot use: Boots used for technical sections; removed on easier terrain
- Transition period: 12–18 months minimum for full conditioning from shod to barefoot
- Best candidates: Horses with naturally hard, concave hooves and access to conditioning terrain
- Vet check monitoring: Hoof condition evaluated at every vet check in FEI-level endurance
Multi-Surface Traction Management
Trail horses frequently cross surfaces within minutes — grass, gravel, hardpan, sand, water, paved road crossings. No single shoe configuration is ideal for all of them. The closest approximation is a medium-weight shoe with borium on heel and toe calks, which provides: grip on rock (borium bites into granite and sandstone), traction on wet grass (calk profile grips turf), durability on gravel (hardened surface resists wear), and acceptable performance on pavement (calks prevent full-flat sliding, though metal on pavement is always slippery). Horses regularly crossing pavement should also be evaluated for rubber pads — pavement concussion at walk adds up over miles.
