The Foundation: Forage First

Before discussing supplements, understand this: the single most important nutritional factor in hoof quality is adequate, high-quality forage. A horse eating good grass hay or quality pasture, getting free-choice water, and receiving balanced minerals will have better hooves than a horse on a mediocre hay base loaded with supplements.

Hooves are made of keratin — a protein. Adequate protein in the diet (from good forage and appropriate grain or balancer) is non-negotiable. Once the foundation is right, targeted supplementation can fill specific gaps.

Key Nutrients for Hoof Quality

These are the nutrients with the strongest evidence base for affecting hoof wall quality, growth rate, and hardness. Not all are equal — the evidence varies.

Biotin (Vitamin B7)
Strong Evidence
The most researched hoof supplement. Multiple controlled studies show biotin supplementation improves hoof wall hardness and reduces cracking in horses with poor-quality hooves. The catch: it takes 9–12 months to see full results, as the hoof must completely grow out.
Effective dose: 20 mg/day minimum. Most commercial products underdose.
Zinc
Strong Evidence
Critical for keratin synthesis. Zinc deficiency produces classic symptoms: cracked, brittle hooves, slow growth, and rough coat. Most hay is zinc-deficient, especially from high-iron soils (iron blocks zinc absorption). A balanced zinc-copper ratio (3:1 to 4:1) matters as much as total zinc.
Target: 400–500 mg/day total. Check your hay's iron content first.
Copper
Strong Evidence
Works synergistically with zinc. Essential for cross-linking of keratin proteins — the structural bonds that make hooves hard. Copper deficiency causes similar symptoms to zinc deficiency. High iron in water or hay suppresses copper absorption dramatically.
Target: 100–125 mg/day. Always balance with zinc (4:1 ratio).
Methionine (Amino Acid)
Good Evidence
A sulfur-containing essential amino acid required for keratin formation. Found in adequate amounts in most diets with good protein sources, but horses with poor hoof quality and low overall protein intake may benefit from supplementation.
Target: 10–15 g/day supplemental if indicated by poor quality.
Lysine
Good Evidence
The first limiting amino acid in horse diets — meaning if lysine is insufficient, the horse can't use other amino acids efficiently. Grass hay is often lysine-deficient. Alfalfa is a good natural source. A protein balancer containing lysine often helps more than individual hoof supplements.
Target: 35–50 g/day for an average 1,100 lb horse at maintenance.
Iodine
Caution Required
Iodine is required for thyroid function, which affects keratin production — but the margin between sufficient and toxic is narrow. Kelp-based supplements are notoriously high in iodine. Supplementing iodine without knowing your baseline is risky. Excess iodine causes the same symptoms as deficiency.
⚠️ Do not supplement without testing. Most horses get enough from salt.

The Iron Problem

This is the most overlooked cause of poor hoof quality in North America. Most hay and water — particularly from well water in iron-rich regions — contains extremely high iron levels. Iron directly suppresses the absorption of zinc and copper, the two minerals most critical for hoof quality.

Test your hay and water for iron before buying supplements. If iron is high (over 200 ppm in hay, over 0.3 ppm in water), you may need to significantly increase zinc and copper to compensate — not just add biotin. High iron while supplementing copper and zinc simply means the minerals compete for absorption and the iron usually wins.

Water & Hoof Health

Hooves are approximately 25% water by weight. Adequate hydration is essential for pliable, functional hooves — hooves that cycle between very dry and very wet are prone to cracking and separation. Ensure constant access to clean, fresh water. In winter, horses on frozen or iced-over water sources drink less — a significant and underappreciated cause of winter hoof problems.

The most effective hoof conditioner isn't from a bottle — it's consistent footing moisture. A horse with access to a small muddy area (like a water trough surround) where he can stand briefly each day will naturally maintain better hoof hydration in dry climates than one kept entirely on dry footing with conditioner applied weekly.
