What Is White Line Disease?
The biology, the anatomy, and why this condition is so easy to miss until it's already serious.
🔬 Understanding the White Line
The white line — also called the zona lamellata — is a narrow band of horn visible on the bottom of the hoof when viewed from the sole. It marks the junction between the outer hoof wall and the inner sole, and it acts as the mechanical bond that holds these two structures together. In a healthy hoof, the white line is tight, pale yellow-white, and continuous around the toe and quarters. It is the most structurally vulnerable part of the hoof capsule — softer than the wall, more porous, and the first target of opportunistic organisms when conditions allow.

White line disease involves a combination of organisms — primarily fungi (Scopulariopsis brevicaulis and related species) along with anaerobic bacteria. These organisms colonize the white line zone, digesting the keratin (horn protein) that holds the hoof wall together. The result is a progressive, hollow separation that works its way upward through the hoof wall from the ground surface toward the coronary band. The organisms are environmental — present in virtually every soil and footing type — and only become a problem when the white line's integrity is compromised.
📍 Where It Develops
WLD almost always begins at the ground surface of the hoof — at the toe, quarter, or heel — and tracks upward. The toe is the most common starting point. Common entry points include:
- Cracks or separations in the white line
- Nail holes from pulled shoes that were not properly maintained
- Mechanical separation caused by laminitic rotation
- Areas of chronic bruising or trauma to the white line
- Hoof wall chips or breaks that expose the white line zone

WLD is an opportunistic infection — the organisms are always present, but they only establish when the white line's defenses are down. Key risk factors:
- Chronic wet-dry cycling that stresses and cracks the hoof horn
- Previous or ongoing laminitis creating mechanical separation
- Long toes creating excessive leverage stress at the white line
- Poor hoof horn quality from nutritional deficiencies
- Infrequent trimming allowing hoof wall distortion
- Gravel or grit worked into existing separations
How to Identify White Line Disease
WLD is notoriously silent — most horses show no lameness until the separation is large. Here's what to look for.
🔍 WLD Severity Stages — Signs, Sounds, and What You Will Find
Stage 1
A small chalky, gray-white, or crumbly area visible on the sole at the white line zone — often at the toe or quarter. Tapping the hoof wall with a hammer produces a hollow "thud" rather than a solid ring directly over the affected area. The horse is sound. Easily missed between farrier visits. Caught here, treatment is simple — minimal resection, clean-out, topical treatment, and done.
Stage 2
Visible flaring or distortion of the hoof wall at the affected quarter or toe. A wider crumbly white-gray zone visible at the sole. The hollow sound on wall tapping covers a larger area. Debris (dirt, gravel, powdery horn material) falls from the separation when the hoof is cleaned. The horse may show very mild sensitivity on hard or rocky ground but is not overtly lame. Farrier resection required — the overlying wall must be removed to expose and treat the cavity.
Stage 3
Large sections of the hoof wall are hollow and separated. The hoof may look visibly distorted — flared, dished, or with an obvious separation gap visible at the white line on the sole. The horse may be noticeably lame, especially on firm ground. In extreme cases, the entire toe wall or one or more quarters may need to be resected. Veterinary involvement is appropriate at this stage for lameness assessment and pain management. Rehabilitation can take 6–12 months as new hoof wall grows down from the coronary band.
Use the handle of your hoof pick or a small hammer and tap methodically around the hoof wall, moving in a grid pattern. A healthy hoof wall gives a solid, resonant sound. A hollow section sounds noticeably duller — almost like tapping on a drum. Mark the boundary of the hollow area and call your farrier. Do this at every hoof picking session if your horse has had WLD before.

Treatment — Three Roles, Three Approaches
WLD treatment is primarily farrier-led — resection is a skilled task requiring hoof knife, nippers, and judgment. The vet and owner each play supporting but essential roles.
The Farrier's Role — Resection, Treatment, Reconstruction
Resection — the surgical removal of the undermined hoof wall — is the cornerstone of WLD treatment. Without it, no topical product can reach the infection. This is skilled farrier work. The goal is to expose the entire affected cavity, eliminate the infection, and then protect and support the hoof while new wall grows down.
The farrier begins with a thorough sole examination and tap test, mapping the exact boundaries of the hollow separation with a marker or chalk. Underestimating the extent of WLD is the most common treatment error — removing only part of the undermined wall leaves active infection behind. The farrier uses hoof testers and careful probing to confirm where healthy bonded wall ends and hollow separation begins.
Using a hoof knife, nippers, and a rotary grinder or Dremel if available, the farrier cuts away all of the hoof wall overlying the hollow cavity. This is often dramatic-looking but necessary — the removed wall was already structurally compromised and providing no support. The farrier cuts until solid, healthy horn is encountered on all margins. The cavity must be completely exposed to air, sunlight, and topical treatment. Partial resection that leaves a roof over part of the cavity will fail — the infection simply continues in the covered area.
Once the wall is removed, the cavity is thoroughly cleaned of all debris, powdery horn material, and necrotic tissue using a wire brush, stiff brush, or rotary tool. The cavity is then flushed with an antiseptic solution — dilute iodine (10%), dilute bleach (1:10), or chlorhexidine. The farrier continues cleaning until the exposed sensitive laminae or inner hoof wall appears uniformly clean with no gray or black discoloration remaining.
With the cavity open and clean, the farrier applies a topical treatment directly to all surfaces. Common effective choices include:
- White Lightning or Clean Trax — chlorine dioxide, applied as a pack or soak; highly effective against WLD organisms
- Copper sulfate paste — antifungal, applied directly into the resected cavity
- Venice turpentine — traditional farrier treatment; antifungal and hardening agent
- Kopertox — copper naphthenate; widely used, effective, penetrating
- Iodine (7% tincture) — applied to all exposed surfaces; dries and disinfects
After resection, the hoof needs protection while the wall regrows. The farrier selects a shoeing strategy based on the size and location of the resection:
- Wide-web shoe — distributes weight across a broader surface, protecting the resected area from ground contact
- Bar shoe (straight or egg bar) — connects the heels and provides additional support, essential when quarter resections compromise lateral wall stability
- Hoof repair composite or acrylic patch — for large resections, the farrier may fill or cap the resected area with a two-part epoxy or acrylic hoof repair material, restoring structural integrity while the wall grows
- Hoof cast or fiberglass wrap — used for the most extensive resections to stabilize the entire hoof capsule during initial regrowth
New hoof wall grows down from the coronary band at approximately 3/8 inch per month at the toe — a full toe-to-ground regrowth takes 9–12 months. During this period the farrier typically moves to a 4–5 week trimming and treatment schedule rather than the standard 6–8 weeks. Each visit allows the farrier to assess growth, redress the healing cavity, and adjust the shoeing as the new wall develops.
Venice Turpentine
Traditional antifungal and hoof hardener. Applied warm into the resected cavity. Penetrates well, stimulates horn growth, and creates an inhospitable environment for fungal regrowth.
Hoof Repair Composite (Equilox, Vettec)
Two-part epoxy or polyurethane acrylic used to cap or fill large resection voids. Restores structural integrity while protecting the healing sensitive laminae underneath.
White Lightning / Clean Trax
Chlorine dioxide-based treatment. Highly effective against WLD fungi and bacteria. Used as a soak or pack in a sealed hoof boot — reaches deep into wall separations.
Copper Sulfate Paste
Antifungal paste applied directly into resected cavities. Strong fungicidal action. Use with gloves — copper sulfate stains skin and is irritating to mucous membranes.
The most critical principle of WLD treatment is that the infected cavity must be fully exposed to air and light. Applying topical products to a cavity that is still covered by the overlying wall, or capping a cavity prematurely with repair composite before the infection is fully resolved, will trap organisms underneath and guarantee recurrence. Open, treat, verify resolution — then protect.
The Veterinarian's Role in WLD
Most white line disease cases are managed entirely by the farrier. The vet becomes involved when WLD is accompanied by lameness, when laminitis is the suspected underlying cause, when sensitive laminae are exposed during resection, or when the horse needs pain management to allow thorough treatment.
When a horse with WLD is lame, the vet performs a lameness evaluation and is likely to recommend radiographs (X-rays) of the affected foot. Radiographs serve two critical purposes: they reveal the internal extent of the separation (which cannot always be assessed from the sole surface), and they detect any rotation or sinking of the coffin bone — a hallmark of laminitis. If laminitis is present and driving the white line separation, treating only the WLD without addressing the laminitis will result in immediate recurrence.
Extensive WLD resections can be uncomfortable even in a non-lame horse, and are painful in horses with underlying laminitis or sensitive laminae exposure. The vet can administer a palmar digital nerve block to desensitize the foot, allowing the farrier to perform thorough resection and debridement without the horse pulling away. This collaboration — vet blocks the foot, farrier does the work — produces far better outcomes than trying to do a painful resection on an anxious, resistant horse.
If radiographs reveal laminitic changes, the vet coordinates with the farrier on a therapeutic shoeing plan — often deep-bedded stall rest, anti-inflammatory medication (phenylbutazone or flunixin), dietary restriction if metabolic disease is involved, and corrective shoeing to realign the coffin bone. Conditions that predispose to WLD include:
- Laminitis — the most common underlying driver of recurrent WLD at the toe
- PPID (Cushing's Disease) — reduces immune function and hoof horn quality; test with ACTH levels
- Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) — drives laminitis through insulin dysregulation
- Biotin / zinc / methionine deficiency — nutritional causes of poor hoof horn quality
Systemic antifungal medications are very rarely used for WLD because the infection is localized to the hoof horn — a non-vascular tissue that systemic medications cannot reach effectively. Treatment is almost entirely topical. However, in cases where the infection has breached into the sensitive laminae or coronary band, the vet may prescribe topical prescription antifungals and monitor for signs of deeper tissue involvement.
Call your vet if the horse is lame, if the resection reveals bleeding or pink sensitive tissue, if the horse has a history of laminitis, if WLD keeps recurring despite good management, or if you suspect an underlying metabolic condition. A single radiograph series is often all that's needed to rule out laminitic rotation and set the recovery plan.
The Horse Owner's Role — Detection, Daily Care, Environment
Because WLD is typically painless and invisible until the farrier looks, the owner's most important role is detection and environment management. You pick the hooves — you are the early warning system. After resection, consistent daily aftercare is what separates a case that resolves in weeks from one that drags on for months.
After every hoof picking, tap methodically around the hoof wall with the handle of your hoof pick. Work in a grid — toe, each quarter, heels. Solid horn rings clearly; hollow separation gives a dull thud. Once you've heard the difference on a horse with known WLD, you'll never miss it again. Catching WLD at a small pocket stage — before it spreads — makes the farrier's resection minor and recovery quick.
After your farrier has completed the resection, daily topical treatment of the open cavity is your job. The specific product your farrier recommends takes priority, but the general protocol is:
- Pick and clean the hoof thoroughly — remove all debris from the cavity
- Dry the cavity with a clean cloth or allow it to air for a few minutes
- Apply the recommended antifungal product — Kopertox, White Lightning soak, iodine, or copper sulfate paste — into the cavity
- Do not pack or seal the cavity unless specifically instructed — air exposure is part of the treatment
- Keep a treatment log — note the date, appearance, and any changes; this is valuable information for your farrier at the next visit
Wet environments dramatically slow WLD recovery. The fungal and bacterial organisms thrive in moisture. During treatment, prioritize keeping the horse on dry footing as much as possible — clean, dry stall bedding, gravel or sand in high-traffic outdoor areas, and limited exposure to mud and standing water. This is especially important for the first 4–6 weeks after resection when the cavity is open and most vulnerable to reinfection.
A large resection area is vulnerable to trauma, packing with debris, and drying out too aggressively. If your farrier has applied a patch or composite, keep it clean and watch for any lifting or cracking of the repair. If the cavity is left open, check it after every turnout to clear any pebbles or debris that have packed in. A hoof boot worn during turnout in rough terrain can protect a sensitive resected foot — ask your farrier whether this is appropriate for your horse's specific resection.
New hoof wall grows at roughly 3/8 inch per month from the coronary band. In a 12-month full regrowth case, you want that new wall to be the best quality horn possible. Support hoof regrowth with:
- Biotin — 20mg/day minimum for therapeutic effect on horn quality
- Zinc and copper — often deficient in hay-based diets; critical for keratin cross-linking
- Methionine — sulfur-containing amino acid required for strong horn
- Consider a complete hoof supplement (e.g., Farrier's Formula, Equine Hoof Care) rather than individual products
Kopertox
Copper naphthenate solution. Strong antifungal penetration. Apply daily into the open cavity with a small brush. Effective against both the fungal and bacterial components of WLD.
White Lightning Soak
Chlorine dioxide. Used in a sealed hoof boot for 30–45 minutes. Excellent penetration into wall separations inaccessible to brush-on products. Use 2–3x per week during active treatment.
7% Tincture of Iodine
Applied daily with a small syringe into the cavity. Dries the cavity, kills organisms, and creates an unfavorable environment for fungal growth. Inexpensive and widely available.
Hoof Supplement (Biotin-Based)
Farrier's Formula, Equine Hoof Care, or similar. Begin immediately after resection and continue through full regrowth — typically 9–12 months. Good horn quality is the best long-term prevention.
Resecting a WLD cavity requires knowing exactly where healthy horn ends and compromised horn begins. Cutting too little leaves infection behind. Cutting too aggressively risks exposing or damaging the sensitive laminae. This is skilled farrier work — your job is daily topical treatment and environment management, not surgery. Call your farrier.
Prevention — Keeping White Line Disease From Returning
WLD has a high recurrence rate in susceptible horses. Prevention requires addressing both the environmental exposure and any underlying condition that compromised the white line in the first place.
Daily Hoof Picking + Tap Test
Pick hooves every day and run the tap test at every session. WLD caught as a small pocket requires a minor farrier visit. Caught late, it requires months of recovery. Daily observation is the difference.
Regular Farrier Schedule
Long toes create extreme leverage stress at the white line, mechanically forcing separation — the perfect entry point for WLD organisms. Regular trimming (every 5–6 weeks for WLD-prone horses) prevents the long toe that drives the condition.
Manage Wet-Dry Cycles
Repeated soaking and drying causes the hoof wall to expand and contract, stressing and cracking the white line zone. Provide consistent footing — avoid horses standing in wet mud for hours then dry concrete. Hoof hardeners (venice turpentine, Keratex) help maintain horn integrity during wet seasons.
Rule Out Metabolic Causes
Horses with recurrent WLD at the toe — especially older horses or easy keepers — should be tested for PPID (Cushing's) and EMS/insulin dysregulation. These conditions drive chronic laminitic separation that perpetually opens the white line to infection.
Hoof-Quality Nutrition
Dense, well-keratinized horn is mechanically resistant to WLD invasion. Biotin (20mg/day), zinc, copper, and methionine all support strong horn quality. Begin supplementation before problems appear — hoof horn changes take months to manifest.
Prompt Repair of Wall Cracks
Any hoof wall crack, chip, or separation is a potential WLD entry point. Have your farrier address cracks promptly — a simple crack repair during a routine visit costs far less than treating the WLD that enters through an ignored crack three months later.
